User Group Meeting - May 2012

Great meeting today!  Thank you everyone for attending online or in-person.  Short meeting today covering:

  • Moodle integration discussion around multiple uploading
  • Training group is developing a 'demystifying Kaltura' video
  • Mobile/Moodle bug feedback
  • Demonstration of new contribution wizard.  Please test this out in the test.moodle2.umn.edu environment and send your feedback to mikew@umn.edu - try this at home please as this is bandwidth dependent
  • OIT Video is changing service offerings and name (Video and Conferencing Services) as part of the overall OIT re-organization.
  • No June meeting.  We are waiting for the 'Falcon' release of Kaltura which closes most of the feature gaps between Kaltura and Media Mill.  This version will allow us to start the migration process later this fall.

Today we launch. First stop, Moodle.

Team,

It's been a long time coming but we finally launched our new media management platform, Kaltura today.  Our first stop, Moodle.  Starting today, all courses in Moodle will be have access to Kaltura via the resources and activities area.  See video below demonstrating this.

To all our very patient users I want to say thank you.  You provided us with tons on input and direction for this service.  Without you, we wouldn't be where we are today.  Lots of exciting stuff coming out this next academic year.

Copyright/IP Notice

We are developing a copyright/IP notice that will act much like the Turnitin plugin within the Moodle platform.  We are modeling the language after the UMedia archive site as this language has already been approved by OGC.  Why re-invent the legal wheels :)  As with the other two policies below we would like your comment on this language.  We tried to make it fairly easy to read with not so much legal-jargon.

Developer API Access

Again, we would like your input moving forward regarding departments accessing the rich API set that Kaltura offers.  Here is the following policy and procedure for your comment.  Final versions will be posted to the oit.umn.edu/media-management website.

Media Retention Policy - Request for Comment

Going to try something new.  Since I personally value community input, I created a Google document with a rough start to a media retention policy.  I would like you to comment on sections of the policy you feel need changing or add sections.  These comments will be reviewed and will be acted on one way or another.

Here is the link to view and comment:

If this works well, I will start adding more for your input.  If this doesn't work we will find additional avenues for your voice to be heard.

User Group Meetings

Another great user group meeting took place this past Monday.  If you missed it and want to review what was discussed visit the following link

Summary of Meeting:

  • Nima Salehi from the School of Nursing demonstrated Moodle/Kaltura integration and provided feedback and questions.
  • Discussed what users are doing with media after a lecture capture.
  • Discussed development regarding iTunesU integration with both Moodle and MediaSpace (Video Portal).
In other news this week, the Media Management Steering Committee met last Friday with Andy Page from Cornell University.  Andy discussed how their implementation worked and where they see the platform going in the future.  Here is a link to Cornell's integration.  The group also met with Nancy Sims from University Libraries regarding copyright and intellectual property.  We will be working to address media retention policies and copyright/IP concerns as it pertains to users and uploading of content through Moodle.

Integration and Defining Workflows

This past week was very busy as we started collaborating with several groups across campus to determine their business needs pertaining to media on campus.

  • The Medical School has ambitions of integrating Kaltura into their Blackbag LMS system starting Fall 2012.  This level of integration will be achieved through the use of Kaltura's rich set of APIs.
  • We met with disability services to start creating request and support workflows.  Automatic Sync Technologies (AST) and 3Play have integration with Kaltura.  Disability Services and OIT will be investigating the level of integration in the weeks to come.  Here are some examples of each technology:  3Play, AST
  • Office of Classroom Management (OCM) and OIT will be planning the upgrade to Camtasia Relay 4.x this summer.
  • OIT started investigating how to best integrate the iTunesU service request process with Kaltura.
  • About a dozen instructional designers requested access to our Moodle 2 testing environment to test drive the Kaltura integration.  If you are interested in trying our the integration between Moodle 2 and Kaltura please email Mike Williams - mikes@umn.edu
  • Our Media Management Steering Committee will meet Friday, February 24th to discuss copyright, intellectual property issues and media retention policies.
  • The Media Management User Group planning team met and decided on an agenda for the Monday, February 27 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. in 101 Walter.  At this months meeting we will explore: users will be discussing their experience with the Moodle sandbox, OCM will be talking about the Camtasia Relay 4 upgrade and a roundtable discussion will take place regarding iTunesU integration. We hope to see you there! The meeting will also be broadcast via UMConnect at umconnect.umn.edu/mmigroup. No RSVP is necessary
  • OIT Support and Training will get their first look at the media management platform and get hands-on training this week as well.
  • OCM and OIT workstation support began testing out the Camtasia Relay 4.x application and investingating ways to deploy the software.
Overall, we are on target to have phase 1 of the media management system in place before the start of the Fall 2012 semester.
